Frequently asked questions

When is the next Ekadashi?

The next Ekadashi is Papankusha Ekadashi, on Thursday, 22 October 2026. Dates are for New Delhi and follow the Smarta rule.

How many Ekadashis are there in a year?

A normal year has 24 Ekadashis, one in the dark half and one in the bright half of each of the 12 months. A year with an Adhik (extra) month has 26. The two extra ones are Padmini and Parama Ekadashi, which came in 2026.

What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each lunar fortnight, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees fast or eat light food, worship Vishnu and break the fast the next morning.

What can I eat on Ekadashi?

Fruit, milk, curd, nuts, sabudana, potatoes, sweet potatoes and rock salt (sendha namak) are commonly taken. Many keep a full fast, or only water or fruit. Rice, wheat and other grains, beans and lentils are avoided on Ekadashi. Many also avoid onion, garlic and regular salt, and do not eat non-vegetarian food on this day.

Which Ekadashi is the most important?

All are sacred. Tradition singles out Nirjala Ekadashi, said to equal the merit of all of them, Devshayani and Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which begin and end Chaturmas, and Mokshada Ekadashi, which is Gita Jayanti.

Why do some Ekadashi dates differ by a day?

Most households follow the Smarta rule: the Ekadashi is the day on which the tithi is present at sunrise. Vaishnava devotees, including many ISKCON and sampradaya followers, follow a stricter rule and in some years keep the day after. Where the two differ, the Vaishnava date is shown alongside. If you follow a Vaishnava tradition, keep that date.
