Kundli matching for marriage: your Guna Milan score
Enter the groom's and the bride's birth details to see the 36-point Ashtakoota score, how each of the eight kootas scored, and whether Nadi or Bhakoot dosha is present. Calculated from the Moon at birth with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
How kundli matching works
Kundli matching, also called kundli milan or Guna Milan, compares two people through the Moon at birth: its sign (rashi) and its nakshatra. Each of the eight kootas looks at a different side of a marriage and carries a different number of points, adding up to 36.
Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) carry more than a third of the total. A couple who lose points on Nadi are in a very different position from a couple who lose the same number on Varna and Vashya, so read which kootas lost points, not only the total.
What score is good?
- Below 18: below the usual minimum. Traditionally discouraged, but exceptions and the rest of the chart can change this.
- 18 to 23.5: acceptable.
- 24 to 31.5: good.
- 32 and above: excellent, and uncommon.
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha
Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). Bhakoot dosha arises when the two Moon signs are in a 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 relation. Both are traditionally taken seriously, and both have recognised exceptions, which this tool lists but does not apply to the score.
Kundli matching by date of birth, not by name
Matching by name uses the nakshatra of the name's first syllable, and is only a fallback when the birth details are lost. This tool uses the real position of the Moon at the birth date and time, which is more accurate. If you do not know the birth time, use 12:00 and treat the result as approximate.
The eight kootas at a glance
| Koota | Score | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and ego: whether the groom's nature can lead and support |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and who influences whom in the relationship |
| Tara | 3 | Health, fortune and wellbeing, from the distance between the two nakshatras |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility, from each nakshatra's animal |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental compatibility: friendship between the two Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Nature and temperament: Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) or Rakshasa (intense) |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional bond, family life and shared finances, from the relation of the two Moon signs |
| Nadi | 8 | Health, constitution and children: the most heavily weighted koota |
| Total | 36 |

Frequently asked questions
Can I do kundli matching by name only?
Kundli milan by name only compares the Moon sign and nakshatra implied by a name's first letter, so it is a rough guide at best. Accurate Guna Milan needs each person's date, time and place of birth, because the Moon's nakshatra and pada decide all eight kootas. Enter the full birth details here for a reliable 36-point score.
What is kundli matching?
Kundli matching, or kundli milan, is the traditional Indian way of checking marriage compatibility from two birth charts. The common method is Ashtakoota Guna Milan: the Moon sign and nakshatra of both people are compared across eight kootas for a score out of 36.
How many gunas should match for marriage?
In North Indian practice 18 out of 36 is the usual minimum. 18 to 23.5 is acceptable, 24 to 31.5 is good and 32 or more is excellent. The total is less important than which kootas lost points: a Nadi or Bhakoot dosha matters more than a missing Varna point.
What is Nadi dosha and is it a reason not to marry?
Nadi dosha means both people fall in the same Nadi, so the 8 Nadi points are lost. Traditionally it is linked to health and children. It is not an automatic bar: several exceptions are recognised, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras. Have both charts read before deciding.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot dosha appears when the two Moon signs are in a 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 relation, and the 7 Bhakoot points are lost. It is traditionally linked to family life and finances. It is commonly considered cancelled when both Moon signs share a lord or their lords are friends.
Does a high Guna Milan score guarantee a happy marriage?
No. A high score means the Moons are well matched, nothing more. It says nothing about Manglik dosha, the running dashas, the 7th house or how two people actually communicate and share values. Treat it as one input among many.
Is this kundli matching accurate, and why might another site show a different score?
The Moon's position is calculated astronomically with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and the scoring follows the standard Ashtakoota scheme. Sites can still differ by a point or two, because practitioners disagree on a few cells of the Vashya and Gana tables, and a wrong birth time or time zone can change the nakshatra.
Can I do kundli matching by name?
Name-based matching takes the nakshatra from the first syllable of the name and is a fallback when birth details are not available. It is less reliable than a match from the date and time of birth, which is what this tool uses.
Is my data stored?
No. The result is calculated from the details in the page address and nothing is saved on our servers.
A score is only a first look. For a marriage decision, book a consultation: both charts, the Manglik check and the dashas, read together.
