What is my rashi? Find your Moon sign by date of birth

In Vedic astrology your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, not your Sun sign. Enter your date and time of birth to find it, along with your nakshatra and what your Moon sign says about your mind.

No exact time? Use 12:00. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days, so noon is right unless you were born close to a sign change.

Moon sign, Sun sign and ascendant

Your chart has three main signs. The Moon sign (rashi) shows the mind and emotions and is the sign used for daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and most predictions in India. The Sun sign shows the self and ego. The ascendant (lagna) shows the body and the frame of life. Newspapers in the West print the Sun sign; in India people ask for the rashi, which is the Moon sign.

Why your Vedic rashi differs from your Western sign

Western astrology measures the zodiac from the spring equinox (the tropical zodiac). Vedic astrology measures it against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac). The two have drifted apart by about 24 degrees, so a planet's Vedic sign is usually the sign before its Western sign (about four times out of five).

Why the time of birth matters

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign. If you were born within a few hours of the Moon changing sign, the exact time decides your rashi. Otherwise noon gives the right answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rashi by date of birth?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth, so it needs the position of the Moon at your date and time of birth. Enter them above and the calculator finds the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa and tells you the sign and the nakshatra.

What is the difference between rashi and zodiac sign?

In India, rashi means the Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. A Western zodiac sign is usually the Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. They are measured differently and often differ.

Can my rashi change?

No. Your Moon sign is fixed at birth. Only a corrected birth time or date can change it, for example when the Moon was near a sign boundary.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Use 12:00. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days, so noon is correct for most birth dates. If you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, ask family for the time or have it checked in a consultation.

Why is my Moon sign different on other websites?

Usually because the other site uses the tropical (Western) zodiac, a different ayanamsa, or the wrong time zone. This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the Indian standard.

Is my data stored?

No. The result is calculated from the details in the page address and nothing is saved on our servers.
