What Sade Sati means

Sade Sati, literally seven and a half, is the period when Saturn (Shani) transits the sign before your natal Moon, the sign of the Moon, and the sign after it. Saturn stays about two and a half years in each sign, so the three signs together take roughly seven and a half years. It repeats about every 29 to 30 years, so most people live through it two or three times.

It is always counted from the Moon sign (janma rashi), not the Sun sign or the ascendant. If you do not know your Moon sign, find it first with the Moon sign calculator.

The three phases

  • Rising phase: Saturn is in the 12th sign from the Moon. It often shows up as extra expenses, travel, disturbed sleep and a feeling of letting go.
  • Peak phase: Saturn is over the Moon sign itself. This is usually the most demanding stretch, testing health, mindset and responsibilities.
  • Setting phase: Saturn is in the 2nd sign from the Moon. Money, family and speech come into focus, and pressure gradually eases.

Dhaiya and how to read your result

Dhaiya, also called Small Panoti, is the two-and-a-half-year period when Saturn is in the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon. Many astrologers treat it as milder than Sade Sati but still worth planning around.

Saturn can move backward for a few months, so it may cross into a sign, step back and re-enter later. The dates above reflect these crossings. Sade Sati is not automatically bad: its effect depends on the strength and placement of Saturn and the Moon in your full chart, and on the running dasha. Sade Sati calculator: common questions

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon sign, about two and a half years in each. It is one of the most discussed Saturn transits in Vedic astrology and is associated with pressure, discipline and long-term lessons rather than fixed bad outcomes.

How does this calculator decide?

It computes Saturn's actual sidereal position and sign changes with the Lahiri ayanamsa, then compares them with the Moon sign you choose. Sade Sati is active when Saturn is in the sign before, the same as, or the sign after your Moon sign.

What is Shani Dhaiya?

Dhaiya (Kantaka Shani) is Saturn's transit through the 4th sign from your Moon, and Ashtama Shani is its transit through the 8th sign. Each lasts about two and a half years.

Why do the start and end dates look uneven?

Saturn goes retrograde each year and can move back into the previous sign for a few months before moving forward again. The tool shows when Saturn first enters each sign and when it finally leaves it.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Results depend on Saturn's condition in your chart, your dasha and your own actions. Many people have productive, disciplined years during Sade Sati. A chart reading can show how it applies to you.

How do I find my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied when you were born. The nakshatra finder on this site gives it from your date and time of birth. Use the Vedic Moon sign, not the Western Sun sign.

How Sade Sati plays out depends on your whole chart, including Saturn's strength and your running dasha. Book a consultation for a personal reading.
