What a kundli is
A kundli, or janam kundli, is a map of the sky at the moment and place of your birth, drawn from the Earth. It shows the sign rising on the eastern horizon (the Lagna), the sign each of the nine grahas occupies, and which of the twelve houses they fall in. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your signs can differ from the Western ones by about 24 degrees.
How to read your kundli
- Start with the Lagna: it is house 1 and sets the frame for the whole chart.
- Note the Moon sign and nakshatra: they describe the mind and drive the Vimshottari dasha.
- See which houses hold planets and which are empty. Empty houses are normal and are read through their lords.
- Check the running Mahadasha and Antardasha, because they decide which planets show their results now.
The twelve houses at a glance
- 1st: self, body and temperament. 2nd: wealth, speech and family. 3rd: courage, effort and siblings.
- 4th: home, mother and peace of mind. 5th: children, education and creativity. 6th: health, debts and service.
- 7th: marriage and partnerships. 8th: transformation and the unexpected. 9th: fortune, dharma and the father.
- 10th: career and status. 11th: gains and friends. 12th: expenses, foreign lands and letting go.
Why the exact birth time and place matter
The Lagna changes about every two hours, so a different time can give a different rising sign, different houses and a different chart. The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, which can change the whole dasha sequence. The birth place fixes the latitude, longitude and the time zone used. If you are unsure of the time, ask family for a birth record, and treat anything else as approximate.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a free kundli online?
Enter your date of birth, time of birth and birth city, then press Create my kundli. You get your lagna, Moon sign and nakshatra, the planets in their houses in North and South Indian chart styles, the Navamsa chart, your Vimshottari dasha periods and a Manglik and Kaal Sarp check. It is free and needs no sign-up.
What is the difference between Lagna and Moon sign?
The Lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth and sets the houses. The Moon sign (Rashi) is the sign the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology the Lagna describes the body and the life frame, and the Moon sign describes the mind. The Moon sign is also what daily horoscopes and Sade Sati use.
Why do I need my exact birth time and place?
The ascendant changes about every two hours and depends on the latitude and longitude of the birth place. The Moon's nakshatra changes about once a day. A wrong time can therefore give a different lagna, different houses and a different dasha order. Use the time on the birth certificate.
Which ayanamsa and node does this kundli use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is the Indian standard, with whole-sign houses and the true node for Rahu and Ketu. We checked the ascendant and the seven visible planets against the Swiss Ephemeris and they agree to about 0.01 degrees. Rahu and Ketu can differ from software that uses the mean node by up to about half a degree.
What is the difference between North and South Indian charts?
They show the same chart in two layouts. In the North Indian style the houses are fixed in position and the signs move, with the Lagna always in the top diamond. In the South Indian style the signs are fixed in position and the Lagna is marked. This page shows both.
What is the Navamsa (D9) chart?
The Navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20'. It is read alongside the main chart for the strength of the planets and for marriage and the deeper promise of the chart.
Is a kundli prediction guaranteed to come true?
No. A kundli shows tendencies and timing, and what you do with them still matters. Treat the doshas and the dasha as information, not as a sentence. A consultation helps you read your chart in context.
Is my data stored?
No. The chart is calculated from the details in the page address and nothing is saved on our servers. The birth-city search sends only the text you type to a geocoding service.
