Find your nakshatra

Your nakshatra is the star group the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date and time to find it, with your pada, Moon sign and the dasha balance you were born with.

What your birth nakshatra is

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Because the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, it changes nakshatra roughly every day, which is why birth time matters.

Each nakshatra has four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. The pada decides the starting syllable of the name and the navamsa the Moon falls in.

Why it matters in Vedic astrology

  • Vimshottari dasha: the lord of your birth nakshatra gives the first dasha of life, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets the balance at birth.
  • Kundli matching: the nakshatras of both partners drive several of the eight kootas, including Nadi, Gana and Yoni.
  • Naming and muhurta: the pada gives the traditional first letter of a name, and the nakshatra is used to choose auspicious times.

Getting an accurate result

Enter the date, the time as printed on the birth record, and the correct time zone. This tool uses the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac, so the result can differ from Western Moon sign sources. If your birth time is uncertain, check whether the Moon is close to a nakshatra boundary, since a few hours can change the answer.

Nakshatra finder: common questions

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the zodiac, each 13°20' wide. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at your birth. Each is split into four padas of 3°20', and each pada has a traditional starting syllable for names.

How is my nakshatra calculated?

The tool computes the Moon's sidereal longitude at your birth moment using the Lahiri ayanamsa, then reads which 13°20' segment it falls in. Dividing the longitude by 13°20' gives the nakshatra; the remainder gives the pada.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For most people the nakshatra is the same across the whole day, but the Moon crosses a nakshatra boundary about once a day. If you were born near that crossing, a few hours of difference changes the result, so the exact time matters.

Why is my nakshatra different on another website?

Usually because of the ayanamsa (Lahiri is standard in India; others differ by under a degree), a time zone or daylight saving mistake, or a tropical rather than sidereal calculation. Western Moon signs use the tropical zodiac and will differ.

What is the dasha balance at birth?

The Vimshottari dasha begins with the ruler of your janma nakshatra. How far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra decides how much of that first mahadasha was already used, and the rest is your balance at birth.
