Prashna kundli: a chart for your question

Prashna is the Vedic way of answering a question from the chart of the moment it is asked, at the place it is asked. Set the time and place (it starts at now), or give a KP number from 1 to 249, and see the chart, the lagna and the Moon, and how the traditional rules read five common questions.

When and where is the question asked?

Where you are now

Think of your question and name the first number from 1 to 249 that comes to mind. Leave empty to use the clock.

Times are local to the place you choose. Asked a while ago? Enter the moment you asked.

Advanced settings

Leave these alone unless you follow a particular school. The defaults (Lahiri, whole-sign houses, true node) are what most Vedic astrologers in India use.

How Prashna works

Prashna (horary astrology) treats the moment a sincere question is asked as the birth of the question. The chart for that moment answers it: the lagna is the person asking, the house of the question is the matter, and the Moon shows the mind behind the question and how the matter moves.

It is useful when there is no reliable birth time, and for a specific question that a birth chart answers only broadly. The classical texts are Prasna Marga (Kerala), Prashna Tantra of Neelakantha and, in the KP school, Krishnamurti's Horary Astrology.

Which house answers which question

  • Marriage and partnership: the 7th house, its lord, and Venus.
  • Job and work: the 10th house and its lord; the 6th (service) and 11th (gains) support it.
  • Travel: the 9th house for long journeys, the 3rd for short ones, the 12th for living abroad.
  • A lost object: the 2nd house of possessions and its lord, the nature of the lagna, and its direction.
  • Wellbeing: the lagna, its lord and the Moon. Read for general vitality only, never as a diagnosis.

Asking well

  • Ask one clear question about something that matters to you now.
  • Use the moment the question is settled in your mind, and the place where you are.
  • Ask once. A second chart for the same question, cast because the first was unwelcome, is not read.
  • For KP, name the number before you look at any table.

What this page computes and what it does not

Computed: the chart for the moment and place, the lagna and Moon, the house lords, the KP sub-lords and, for KP charts, the houses each planet signifies. Traditional: the reading lines, which apply a fixed set of rules mechanically. A full Prashna also weighs the time of day, omens (nimitta) and the astrologer's judgement, which no page can do.

Prashna kundli: common questions

What is a Prashna kundli?

A Prashna (horary) kundli is a chart cast for the moment a question is asked, not for a birth. The rising sign (lagna) stands for the person asking, the Moon for their mind and the matter's flow, and the house of the question (the 7th for marriage, the 10th for work and so on) for the thing asked about.

Which time and place should I use?

Traditionally the moment the question is clearly formed and put to the astrologer, at the place where you are when you ask. This page starts at the current time; set the place to where you are now, not your birthplace.

What is the KP number from 1 to 249?

In Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) horary, you think of the question and name a number from 1 to 249. Each number is one sub-division of the zodiac (27 nakshatras × 9 subs, plus six subs split by a sign boundary). The start of that division becomes the ascendant; the planets stay where they are at the moment of judgement. This page then uses the KP ayanamsa and Placidus cusps, as KP does.

How are the readings worked out?

Each line names the placement it comes from: the lagna lord and the lord of the house of the question, planets in and aspecting that house, the Moon, and for KP charts the sub-lord of the relevant cusp. These are traditional rules from texts such as Prasna Marga, Prashna Tantra and Krishnamurti's Horary Astrology, applied mechanically. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Can I ask the same question again?

Tradition says no: a question is asked once, sincerely, and the first chart is the one to read. Asking repeatedly until the answer pleases is said to make the chart meaningless.

Is the health reading a medical opinion?

No. It is a traditional reading of general vitality and wellbeing only. It cannot diagnose or predict illness. For any health concern, please see a doctor.

A Prashna is read for one sincere question at a time, and an astrologer weighs the whole chart rather than a fixed list of rules. Book a consultation to have your question read in full.
