What is kundli matching (kundli milan), and how is the 36-point score made?
Kundli matching, also called kundli milan or horoscope matching, compares two people's birth charts for marriage using Ashtakoota Guna Milan. It scores eight factors (kootas) out of 36 points, and it works mainly from each person's Moon sign and nakshatra. A score of 18 or more is traditionally acceptable, 24 or more good and 32 or more excellent, but which factors lose points matters more than the total.
Families often quote one number, such as "28 guna mil rahe hain". That number is a useful first filter and nothing more. A high score is not a guarantee, and a low one does not end a good match. This guide explains what each part checks, how to read the result, and what the score cannot tell you.

What do you need to match two kundlis?
You need each person's date, exact time and place of birth. The score depends on the Moon's sign and nakshatra at birth, and the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a time that is off by a few hours can change the nakshatra or even the sign. Matching by name only. When birth details are missing, some families match by name, using the Moon sign (rashi) that goes with the first letter of the name. That is a fallback with weak precision, because the name-based rashi can differ from the real Moon sign. What are the eight kootas of Guna Milan?

The eight add up to 36. Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) together carry 15 points, more than a third of the total, and traditional practice treats a zero on either as a more serious flag than a few points lost on Varna or Vashya. What does a Guna Milan score of 18, 24 or 32 mean?
The commonly cited bands are:
- Below 18: traditionally discouraged, though this is where the details matter most.
- 18 and above: generally acceptable.
- 24 and above: good.
- 32 and above: excellent.
Here is why the total misleads. Take two hypothetical matches. In the first, the couple scores 28, but the missing 8 points are all Nadi. In the second, they score 24, with Nadi and Bhakoot both full and the loss spread over smaller factors. Many traditional astrologers would look harder at the first couple, even though 28 is the bigger number. The point is that 36 is not 36 interchangeable points.
When is a low score or a dosha set aside?
Matching traditions recognise exceptions (parihara). The best known are:
- Nadi dosha: it is treated as not arising when both partners have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different Moon signs. A further pada-based exception is cited in practice, although schools differ on it.
- Bhakoot dosha: it is softened when the two Moon-sign lords are the same planet or mutual friends.
- Strong overall compatibility: some astrologers weigh the full charts heavily enough to soften a low score.

What does Guna Milan not check?
Ashtakoota matching is a Moon-based filter. It does not evaluate:

- Real compatibility. Values, communication, family expectations, health and money shape a marriage far more than a koota score. For medical concerns, such as inherited conditions, ask a doctor or genetic counsellor, not a chart.
How should a complete matching check go?
- Run Guna Milan with accurate birth details for both people.
- Check Mangal dosha for both, and whether it is partial or cancelled.
- Read the 7th house of each full chart: its lord, aspects and any affliction.
- Look at both dashas for the next few years.
- Apply the recognised exceptions where they genuinely fit, rather than reading the score as final.
