What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a daily period of roughly 90 minutes, one-eighth of the time between sunrise and sunset, that Vedic tradition treats as unsuitable for starting new or important work. Its exact time changes every day and from city to city, because it is calculated from local sunrise and sunset.
How Rahu Kaal is calculated
- Take the local sunrise and sunset for the day.
- Divide the daylight into eight equal parts.
- Rahu Kaal is one fixed part for each weekday: Monday 2nd, Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Friday 4th, Saturday 3rd, Sunday 8th.
On a day with a 6:00 AM sunrise and a 6:00 PM sunset, that works out as follows:
| Weekday | Part | Rahu Kaal |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 2 | 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM |
| Tuesday | 7 | 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM |
| Wednesday | 5 | 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM |
| Thursday | 6 | 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM |
| Friday | 4 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Saturday | 3 | 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM |
| Sunday | 8 | 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM |
This table only works for a 6:00 AM sunrise. Sunrise moves through the year and across India, so use your city's page for the real time.
Is Rahu Kaal the same everywhere?
No. The weekday slot stays the same, but the start and end times follow local sunrise and sunset. On the same day, Rahu Kaal in Kolkata (02:17 pm – 03:45 pm) and Mumbai (03:20 pm – 04:49 pm) can be about an hour apart.
What to avoid, and what is fine, during Rahu Kaal
Tradition advises against starting something new and important in Rahu Kaal, such as signing an agreement, beginning a journey, opening a shop, a griha pravesh, or making a big purchase. Work you began earlier can carry on as normal. Daily routine, office work, meals and rest are not affected.
Puja is where traditions differ. Some, especially in South India, consider Rahu Kaal a good time for Durga or Rahu worship, such as the Rahu Stotram or the Durga Chalisa. Others prefer to keep auspicious ceremonies out of it altogether. Follow the practice of your family or your priest.
Rahu Kaal describes a tendency in the day, not a verdict. If something can't wait, carry on calmly. Nothing is doomed because of the clock.

Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal and Yamaganda: the difference
All three are daily windows of about 90 minutes, worked out from the same eight-way split of daylight but falling on different parts of the day. Rahu Kaal is the most widely followed for avoiding new beginnings. Yamaganda is also avoided. Gulika Kaal is read differently, because tradition says whatever starts in it tends to repeat, so it suits good things you'd like more of but not things like loans.

Frequently asked questions
What is Rahu Kaal?
It's a daily window of about 90 minutes, one-eighth of daylight, that Vedic tradition avoids for starting new or important work. It moves every day because it depends on local sunrise and sunset.
How is Rahu Kaal calculated?
Daylight is split into eight equal parts, and Rahu Kaal is a fixed part for each weekday: Monday 2nd, Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Friday 4th, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 8th. Our times use your city's actual sunrise and sunset.
What should not be done during Rahu Kaal?
Traditionally, you avoid starting new ventures, signing deals, beginning journeys, moving house, or making major purchases. Everyday work and anything already underway can continue.
Can we do puja during Rahu Kaal?
Traditions differ. Many South Indian families do Durga or Rahu puja specifically in Rahu Kaal, while others keep all auspicious ceremonies out of it. Follow your family's practice or your priest's advice.
Does Rahu Kaal change every day and in every city?
Yes. The weekday rule is fixed, but sunrise and sunset change daily and from city to city, so the clock time does too. That's why each city has its own page.
Can I continue work I started before Rahu Kaal?
Yes. The tradition is about beginning something important, not about stopping work that's already in progress.
What is the difference between Rahu Kaal, Gulika and Yamaganda?
They are three separate daily windows of similar length. Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are avoided for new beginnings, while Gulika is believed to make whatever starts in it repeat.
What if a good Choghadiya falls in Rahu Kaal?
Traditionally you skip that overlap and pick a good Choghadiya that falls outside Rahu Kaal.
