What an ephemeris is
An ephemeris is a table of where the planets are, day by day. Astrologers have used printed ones such as Lahiri's Indian Ephemeris for generations to cast charts by hand, to see when a planet changes sign or nakshatra, and to check transits against a birth chart. This page computes the same table for any month from 1900 to 2100.
Every position is sidereal (nirayana), measured with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the Indian government standard. Rahu and Ketu use the true node, so they wobble a little and can briefly turn direct; software that uses the mean node can differ from this by up to about half a degree.
How to read the table
- Time: each row is the position at 00:00 UTC, which is 05:30 in India. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so by evening it can be 6 or 7 degrees further on. For an exact moment use the kundli or the planetary transits page.
- Sign and degree: the sidereal sign followed by degrees and minutes within it (0° to 29° 59').
- Nakshatra and pada: the lunar mansion (each 13° 20') and its quarter, 1 to 4.
- R means retrograde (vakri): the planet appears to move backwards from Earth. Rahu and Ketu are normally retrograde, so the mark is expected for them.
- C means combust (asta): the planet is within the traditional orb of the Sun, the same orbs the kundli uses: Moon 12°, Mars 17°, Mercury 14° (12° when retrograde), Jupiter 11°, Venus 10° (8° when retrograde), Saturn 15°.
Accuracy and the CSV download
The positions come from the same calculation as the kundli on this site, which we checked against the Swiss Ephemeris: the Sun, Moon and visible planets agree to about 0.01 degrees. The download gives the full month with longitudes to four decimals, one row per planet per day, ready for a spreadsheet.
Ephemeris: common questions
What time are these positions for?
Each row is calculated for 00:00 UTC, which is 05:30 India Standard Time on the same date. Slow planets barely change within a day, but the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so for a birth or event time use the kundli calculator instead.
Which ayanamsa and node does this ephemeris use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the official Indian standard, and the true node for Rahu and Ketu. These are the same settings the kundli and transit pages on this site use, so the numbers match.
Why are Rahu and Ketu always marked retrograde?
The lunar nodes move backwards through the zodiac on average, so they are normally retrograde. With the true node they occasionally pause or move forward for a short time, and the table shows that when it happens.
What does combust mean?
A planet is combust (asta) when it is so close to the Sun that it is hidden in its glare. Traditional texts treat a combust planet as weakened in what it signifies. The orbs used here are listed in the guide below and match the kundli.
Can I download the data?
Yes. The Download CSV button gives the whole month in a spreadsheet-friendly file: date, time (UTC), planet, sidereal longitude, sign, degree in sign, nakshatra, pada and the retrograde and combust marks.
How far back and forward does it go?
Any month from January 1900 to December 2100.
An ephemeris shows where the planets are; what a transit means for you depends on your birth chart and running dasha. Book a consultation for a personal reading.
