Find your rashi from your name

Type a name to see the rashi its first syllable points to, and the nakshatra pada behind it. This is the name rashi (naam rashi), used for naming, matching by name and when the birth time is not known.

Type the name in English letters or in Devanagari, spelled the way it sounds. The first syllable decides the result.

How a name gives a rashi

Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has a traditional starting syllable (akshara), 108 in all. A child is classically named from the syllable of the pada the Moon was in at birth, so the first letter of the name points back to that pada, and the pada sits inside one of the twelve rashis. Nine padas make one rashi.

Name rashi and birth rashi

Your birth rashi, or janma rashi, is the sign the Moon was in at your birth. It is the rashi used for daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and dashas. The name rashi (naam rashi) comes only from the first letter of the name. The two match when the name was chosen from the birth pada, and often differ when it was not, which is common today.

Use the name rashi when the birth date or time is not known, or for traditions that match by name. Whenever you know the birth details, the birth rashi is the one to trust.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rashi by name?

Type your name above. The calculator takes the first syllable, finds the nakshatra pada that uses it as its starting syllable, and reads the rashi that pada belongs to.

Is the rashi by name the same as my birth rashi?

Not always. The birth rashi is the Moon's sign at birth. The name rashi only reflects the first letter of your name, so the two match mainly when the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra pada. Use the date of birth for your true rashi.

Why does my name show more than one rashi?

Some starting syllables, such as Ta, Ti, Na or Da, are listed under more than one nakshatra pada in the tradition. A name beginning with one of them can point to more than one rashi. Only the birth chart can say which one is yours.

Which rashi should I use for a horoscope if I do not know my birth time?

If you know your birth date, use it: the Moon changes sign only about every two and a quarter days, so the date alone gives your rashi in most cases. Use the name rashi only when no birth date is known.

Does the spelling of my name change the result?

Only the first syllable matters, and it is read by sound. Spellings like Reena and Rina, or Pooja and Puja, give the same result. Write the name the way it is pronounced.

Can I use the name rashi for kundli matching?

Some traditions match by name when the birth details are lost, but it is only a rough guide. Accurate Guna Milan needs each person's date, time and place of birth.

A name rashi is only a first guide. For your true Moon sign and what it means for you, book a consultation with your birth chart.
