Chaldean Numerology: Chart, Calculator & Number Meanings
Chaldean numerology gives each letter of your name a number from 1 to 8 based on its sound, then adds the letters to find your name number. You can work it out in two minutes with the chart below: write your name, look up each letter, add the values, and reduce the total to a single digit. I also explain what the result means, why 9 is never assigned to a letter, and how this system differs from Pythagorean numerology.
In my own practice I use Chaldean numerology for names, because most of my readers in India come to numerology through name spelling and the Chaldean system is the one most widely used here. I treat the result as a mirror for self-reflection, not as a verdict on your future.
The Chaldean numerology chart (letter-to-number table)
This is the standard Chaldean numerology table, the same one our free numerology calculator uses:
| Number | Letters | Ruling planet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y | Sun |
| 2 | B, K, R | Moon |
| 3 | C, G, L, S | Jupiter |
| 4 | D, M, T | Rahu |
| 5 | E, H, N, X | Mercury |
| 6 | U, V, W | Venus |
| 7 | O, Z | Ketu |
| 8 | F, P | Saturn |
| 9 | (no letters) | Mars |
The same chart, letter by letter, is easier to use while calculating:
| A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 8 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| N | O | P | Q | R | S | T | U | V | W | X | Y | Z |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 7 | 8 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 5 | 1 | 7 |
Why there is no 9 in the Chaldean chart
In the Chaldean tradition, 9 is treated as a sacred, complete number, so no letter is given that value. A name can still add up to 9 (for example, a total of 18 or 27), and then 9 is read like any other result. It simply never appears as the value of a single letter.
Why the letters are not in alphabetical order
The Pythagorean system assigns 1 to 9 in a simple repeating sequence (A=1, B=2 … I=9, J=1). The Chaldean chart groups letters by their sound and vibration instead, which is why F and P share 8 while O and Z share 7. This is the main reason the two systems give different answers for the same name.
How to calculate your name number in Chaldean numerology
Here is the full method, step by step:
- Write the name you actually use. In my practice, this is the name people call you and the name you sign with, not a name you never use.
- Look up each letter in the Chaldean numerology chart above.
- Add the values for each word, then add the word totals together. This grand total is your compound number.
- Reduce the compound number by adding its digits until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9. This is your root number, often called the name number or Namank.
Worked example: PRIYA SHARMA
Let's take a sample name, Priya Sharma.
First name: PRIYA
| Letter | P | R | I | Y | A | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 8 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 13 |
Surname: SHARMA
| Letter | S | H | A | R | M | A | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 3 | 5 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 16 |
Full name:
- Compound number: 13 + 16 = 29
- Reduce: 2 + 9 = 11
- Reduce again: 1 + 1 = 2
So the Chaldean name number for "Priya Sharma" is the compound number 29 with a root number 2, which is ruled by the Moon.
Two things are worth noticing:
- The first name alone gives a different answer. "Priya" by itself totals 13, which reduces to 4. This is why it matters which form of the name you use, and why I ask people to use the name they really live with.
- The compound number carries its own meaning. In the Chaldean tradition described by the palmist and numerologist Cheiro, the single digits 1 to 9 describe the outer, material side of life, while compound numbers from 10 up to 52 are read separately for a deeper layer. Our calculator shows both, so you do not lose that detail.
If you want to skip the arithmetic, type your name into the Chaldean numerology calculator. It shows the letter values, the compound number and the root number instantly.
What each Chaldean name number means (1 to 9)
These are short summaries. Each number has many shades, and the meaning shifts when you read it alongside your birth numbers.
- 1, Sun: leadership, confidence, independence and ambition. The challenge is ego and stubbornness.
- 2, Moon: sensitivity, intuition, cooperation and imagination. The challenge is mood swings and over-dependence on others' approval.
- 3, Jupiter: wisdom, optimism, teaching and expression. The challenge is scattering energy or preaching instead of listening.
- 4, Rahu: practicality, discipline, hard work and unconventional thinking. The challenge is sudden obstacles and rigidity. Read more about number 4.
- 5, Mercury: intelligence, communication, adaptability and a flair for business. The challenge is restlessness and inconsistency. Read more about number 5.
- 6, Venus: love, beauty, comfort, family and creativity. The challenge is over-indulgence and a need to please.
- 7, Ketu: introspection, analysis, research and spiritual depth. The challenge is withdrawal and overthinking. Read more about number 7.
- 8, Saturn: discipline, perseverance, responsibility and slow but lasting results. The challenge is delays and pessimism. Read more about number 8.
- 9, Mars: energy, courage, action and compassion. The challenge is anger and impatience. Read more about number 9.
Name number, birth number and destiny number: how they fit together
A name number is only one part of the picture. In Indian numerology we usually look at three numbers together:
- Mulank (birth number): your day of birth reduced to one digit. Someone born on the 29th has Mulank 2 + 9 = 11 → 2.
- Bhagyank (destiny number): your full date of birth reduced to one digit.
- Namank (name number): the Chaldean total of your name, as calculated above.
The name number is traditionally read for harmony with the other two, based on whether their ruling planets are friendly, neutral or opposed. A name number of 2 (Moon), for example, is considered comfortable with a Mulank of 1, because the Sun and the Moon are natural friends. You can read about your own birth number on the Mulank pages, and see how your name sits with both birth numbers in the name correction tool.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean numerology: the key differences
| Chaldean | Pythagorean | |
|---|---|---|
| Letter values | 1 to 8, grouped by sound | 1 to 9, in alphabetical sequence |
| The number 9 | Never assigned to a letter | Assigned to I and R |
| Compound numbers | Read separately (10 to 52) | Usually reduced straight to one digit, with "master numbers" 11, 22 and 33 kept |
| Which name | Usually the name you use day to day | Usually the full birth name |
| Where it is popular | Widely used in Indian numerology and name correction | Common in Western numerology |
The same name can give two different results. "Priya Sharma" totals 29 → 2 in Chaldean but 57 → 12 → 3 in Pythagorean. Neither answer is "wrong". They are two separate systems, and you should stick to one rather than switch until you like the result. A balanced way to use Chaldean numerology
I have seen numerology help people think about their strengths, their habits and the way they present themselves. I have also seen people worry for months over a single letter. Here is how I suggest approaching it:
- Use it to reflect, not to predict. A number describes tendencies. It does not decide your career, marriage or income.
- Be careful about changing your name. If you are thinking about a spelling change, read the practical and legal points in my guide to numerology for name correction first. A new spelling can create mismatches across your Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank records.
- Read the numbers together. A name number means more when you read it with your Mulank and Bhagyank, and alongside your birth chart if you have one.
Conclusion
Chaldean numerology is simple to calculate once you have the chart: look up each letter, add the values, and read both the compound number and the root number. Its real value comes from reading your name number alongside your birth numbers, as a prompt for self-reflection rather than a prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chaldean numerology?
Chaldean numerology is a system that gives each letter a value from 1 to 8 based on its sound, then adds the values to find a name number. It is traditionally linked to ancient Babylon (Chaldea) and is widely used in Indian name numerology today.
How do I use the Chaldean numerology chart?
Write the name you use, look up each letter's value in the chart and add them to get your compound number. Then add the digits of that total until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9, which is your root name number.
Why is the number 9 missing from the Chaldean numerology table?
In the Chaldean tradition, 9 is regarded as a sacred and complete number, so no letter is assigned to it. A name can still add up to 9, and that total is interpreted normally.
Is Chaldean numerology more accurate than Pythagorean?
Neither system has been shown to be more accurate. They are different traditions that use different letter values. I use Chaldean because it is the most common system in Indian practice, but the important thing is to choose one system and use it consistently.
Is there a free Chaldean numerology calculator?
Yes, you can use the free calculator on this site to see each letter's value, your compound number and your root name number. It also shows your Mulank and Bhagyank when you enter your date of birth.
