27 Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology: Meaning, Lords, Padas and How to Find Yours

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments of the zodiac, each measuring 13 degrees 20 minutes. In Vedic astrology, your birth nakshatra is the segment the Moon was in when you were born. It is often called your "birth star" (janma nakshatra), and it carries more weight than most people expect.

Your Moon sign tells you the broad emotional climate. Your nakshatra narrows it down. Twelve signs divided into 27 nakshatras gives a far finer picture of temperament, instincts and life timing. It also decides which planet your Vimshottari dasha sequence starts with.

If you only know your sun sign from newspaper columns, the nakshatra is the first thing worth learning about your chart.

What is a nakshatra?

The word nakshatra is usually translated as "lunar mansion". The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the zodiac, so it spends roughly a day in each nakshatra. Ancient observers tracked the Moon night after night against fixed stars, and the 27 stations are what they recorded.

The 360 degrees of the zodiac divide neatly:

  • 360 degrees ÷ 27 nakshatras = 13°20' each
  • Each nakshatra splits into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20'
  • 27 × 4 = 108 padas, which links to the 108 you see in mala beads and mantra counts

Each pada maps to part of a sign, which is how nakshatras and the 12 rashis fit together. Each sign contains exactly nine padas.

What is the nakshatra list: the 27 nakshatras, their lords and signs?

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet. The sequence of nine planets repeats three times through the zodiac, in this order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. This is the same order used in Vimshottari Dasha.

The ruling planet colours the nakshatra's character. Each nakshatra also has a presiding deity and a symbol, which classical texts use to describe its qualities. Reading these in full is a study in itself, and different teachers emphasise different layers.

How do you find your nakshatra by date of birth?

Skip the manual steps: the free nakshatra finder, which works as a nakshatra calculator by date of birth, gives your nakshatra, pada, Moon sign and dasha balance from your birth date and time. Each nakshatra also has its own page, starting from the list of all 27 nakshatras, and the names in the table below link to them.

You need your exact birth date, time and place, because the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day. A birth time that is off by a few hours can change the pada, and sometimes the nakshatra itself.

  1. Generate a Vedic (sidereal) birth chart. Use a calculator that uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India. Western charts use the tropical zodiac and will give different results.
  2. Find the Moon's longitude in the chart, for example 14° Taurus.
  3. Convert to a nakshatra. Count degrees from 0° Aries. For example, the Moon at 14° Taurus is at 44° of the zodiac (30° for Aries + 14°). Divide by 13.33, and 44 ÷ 13.33 ≈ 3.3, which places it in the 4th nakshatra: Rohini.
  4. Find the pada. Take the remaining degrees inside the nakshatra and divide by 3°20'.

Any good Vedic software shows the nakshatra and pada automatically. If you are unsure of your Moon sign first, read how to find your Moon sign.

Why your nakshatra matters

It sets your dasha starting point

The ruling planet of your birth nakshatra is the first planet in your Vimshottari dasha. Someone born in Rohini starts life in a Moon dasha. A Pushya birth begins in a Saturn dasha. The exact balance of that first dasha depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra at birth. This is the foundation of Vedic prediction timing.

It refines personality

Two people with Moon in Taurus can feel quite different if one is Krittika (fiery, critical), one is Rohini (sensual, creative) and one is Mrigashira (curious, restless). The nakshatra gives the "texture" within the sign.

It guides matching and auspicious timing

Marriage compatibility in North Indian tradition uses nakshatra-based Ashtakoota points, including Nadi, Gana and Tara. See kundli matching and Guna Milan. Nakshatras are also used to pick muhurat, the auspicious time for ceremonies and new beginnings, and traditionally for naming ceremonies.

It shapes remedies

Some traditional remedies are linked to a nakshatra's lord and deity. The planet-specific mantras and stotras in our planet stotra guide work well alongside them.

Nakshatras in short: groups and themes

Classical texts group the 27 nakshatras in several ways. Two common groupings help beginners:

  • By nature (gana): Deva (gentle, divine), Manushya (human, balanced) and Rakshasa (intense, bold). In matching, similar ganas tend to be easier to pair.
  • By activity: some nakshatras are described as fixed and good for building (such as Rohini and the Uttaras), some as swift and good for travel or trade (such as Ashwini and Hasta), and some as sharp and suited to confrontation or surgery (such as Mula and Ardra).

These are traditions. They are tools for interpretation, not rules that lock your fate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a tropical chart. Western software gives a different Moon position, and the nakshatra can differ.
  • Guessing the birth time. If your time is uncertain, ask a family member or check the birth certificate. A rectified chart is better than a guess.
  • Reading a nakshatra in isolation. The sign, house, aspects and dasha all shape the result. One nakshatra description is not a full reading.
  • Treating some nakshatras as "bad". Mula, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Magha, Revati and Ashwini are sometimes called gandmool nakshatras and said to need extra attention at birth. This is a traditional belief, and the outcome depends on the chart and on practical, calm remedies, not fear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many nakshatras are there in Vedic astrology?

There are 27 main nakshatras, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac. Some texts also mention a 28th, Abhijit, in a small portion of Capricorn, but most modern practice uses 27.

How do I find my nakshatra by date of birth?

Enter your exact date, time and place of birth in the free nakshatra finder, which uses the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac. The Moon's position at birth gives your nakshatra and its pada. A date alone is not enough, because the Moon changes nakshatra roughly every day.

Which nakshatras are Gandmool?

Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. They sit at the junctions of water and fire signs. See Gandmool nakshatra for what that means and how families approach it calmly.

Is nakshatra the same as Moon sign?

No. The Moon sign (rashi) is one of 12 divisions of 30 degrees each. The nakshatra is a finer one of 27 divisions. Each sign holds about two and a quarter nakshatras.

Can my nakshatra change?

No. It is fixed by the Moon's position at your birth. If a calculator gives you a different result, check whether it uses the sidereal zodiac and whether the birth time is correct.

Which nakshatra is the best?

None is best. Each has strengths and challenges. Rohini, Pushya and Uttara Phalguni are traditionally seen as supportive, but nakshatra descriptions are only one layer of a chart.
