What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya is a Vedic timing system that splits the day, from sunrise to sunset, and the night, from sunset to the next sunrise, into eight equal slots each. Each slot is named Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Rog or Kaal. The first four are traditionally considered good for starting work, and the slot lengths change daily with local sunrise and sunset.

Which Choghadiya is good for what

  • Amrit: considered good for all kinds of work.
  • Shubh: preferred for ceremonies, puja and family occasions.
  • Labh: preferred for business, buying and study.
  • Char: preferred for travel and work that involves movement.
  • Udveg, Rog, Kaal: traditionally avoided for new beginnings. Udveg is often still used for government-related work.

When a good Choghadiya overlaps Rahu Kaal

Most traditions skip a good Choghadiya if it falls inside Rahu Kaal and pick the next good slot outside it instead. On this page, any slot that overlaps Rahu Kaal is marked, so you can see your clean options at a glance.
