Times are local to the place chosen and rounded to the minute. Planet positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa; sunrise, Choghadiya and Rahu Kaal follow the library's panchang, which agrees with published almanacs to within a few minutes. Take this as a shortlist: for a wedding or griha pravesh, confirm the final muhurta and lagna with your family priest.

Where we depart from the library
- Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya always count as unfavourable. Some stock lists put one on the favourable side, for example Shukla Chaturdashi, which reads as a slip between 0- and 1-based tithi numbers rather than a tradition. These are marked *.
- Bhadra: the library drops the whole day if Bhadra touches it, which removed about 40% of days in our tests. Muhurta Chintamani forbids the Vishti karana period, so we keep the day and keep Bhadra out of the window.
- Ganda Mula: where the rule excludes it, the library drops any day whose sunrise Moon is in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati, though it lists Magha, Mula and Revati as good for marriage. Ganda Mula is a birth rule; for muhurta the texts avoid the gandanta junction, so we keep one pada either side of each junction out of the window.
Where traditions differ
- Kharmas
- The Sun in Sagittarius (about mid-December to mid-January) or Pisces (about mid-March to mid-April), also called Malmas. Muhurta Chintamani leaves these solar months out of its marriage list. North Indian almanacs hold no weddings, housewarmings or mundan in Kharmas. Many South Indian families do not use the idea; Tamil Nadu avoids its own solar month Margazhi for weddings instead.
- Chaturmas
- The four months from Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi) to Prabodhini or Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), when Vishnu is said to rest. In North India weddings and griha pravesh wait for Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Much of South India holds weddings in Shravana and avoids the solar month of Aadi instead, and Vijayadashami, inside Chaturmas, is the favourite day to begin learning.
- Guru asta (Jupiter set)
- Jupiter within 11 degrees of the Sun (the Surya Siddhanta combustion orb), when it cannot be seen. Texts bar marriage, upanayana and other samskaras while Jupiter is set. Almanacs that time asta by visibility can begin or end it a few days apart from the 11-degree rule, and some also skip a few days on either side (balya and vriddha).
- Shukra asta (Venus set)
- Venus within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 degrees while retrograde. Venus governs marriage and comfort, so its setting is avoided for weddings and a new home. As with Jupiter, visibility-based almanacs may differ by a few days. A few regional traditions only avoid Venus being set for the wedding itself, not for other samskaras.
- Holashtak
- The eight days from Phalguna Shukla Ashtami to Holika Dahan on Phalguna Purnima. Kept mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Most of South and East India does not observe it.
What a vivah muhurat looks at
Marriage is the most carefully timed of the samskaras. The almanac first narrows the year to the season when weddings are held at all, then picks days whose tithi, nakshatra and weekday suit a lasting union, and finally the family priest fixes the lagna for the pheras or saptapadi.
The rule here favours Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, and avoids Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Vishakha and Jyeshtha. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favoured; Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday count against a day, though some almanacs accept Sunday.
The wedding season
In North India weddings pause through Chaturmas, from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartika, and again in Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces. They also wait while Jupiter or Venus is set (asta), since Jupiter blesses the bride and Venus the marriage itself. That is why the main seasons fall roughly from late November to mid-December, mid-January to early March, and mid-April to early July.
Muhurta Chintamani names the solar months with the Sun in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius. We show this on each date but do not score it, because North Indian almanacs also list weddings with the Sun in Libra once Chaturmas ends.
Night windows and the lagna
Many North Indian weddings take place in the evening or at night, around Godhuli or a stable lagna, so for marriage the finder also looks at the night Choghadiya. The lagnas rising through the best window are listed so the priest can pick the exact moment; a fixed or dual sign with benefics in the 1st, 7th and 10th is the usual aim.
- Match the two kundlis first (gun milan and Manglik); a good date does not replace matching.
- Run personal mode for the bride and the groom separately and keep the dates that pass for both.
- Book venues early for the peak dates; families often shortlist three or four dates and let the priest choose.
How the dates are chosen
Each day in the range is scored on the four limbs of the panchang that matter for timing an event: the tithi, the nakshatra, the weekday and the yoga, all read at sunrise. Every day starts at 50; a limb on the occasion's favourable list adds 10 and one on its unfavourable list takes 15. Amrit Siddhi, Sarvartha Siddhi, Ravi Pushya and Guru Pushya add 5, Jwalamukhi takes 10. Days below 50 are left out, and so are days the rule bars outright, such as Ekadashi, an eclipse or an Adhika month.
Then the season: Kharmas, Chaturmas, Jupiter or Venus being set, Holashtak or Pitru Paksha, whichever apply to the occasion. These are where traditions differ most, so you can show those days flagged instead of hidden.
Last, the time. Inside each remaining day we take the good Choghadiya slots and Abhijit muhurta, and cut out Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika, Dur Muhurta, Varjyam, Bhadra and any hours when an unfavourable tithi or nakshatra has begun. The best piece left is the window shown; if nothing of at least 24 minutes is left, the day is dropped. Days are ranked by score, then by the quality and length of the window.
Personal dates: Tarabala and Chandrabala
A day can be good in general and still be poor for one person. Two checks from Muhurta Chintamani make it personal. Tarabala counts from the person's birth nakshatra to the day's nakshatra and reduces the count to a cycle of nine taras; the 3rd (Vipat), 5th (Pratyari) and 7th (Vadha) are bad. Chandrabala counts the house of the day's Moon from the birth Moon sign; the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good.
Personal mode keeps only the hours when both are good and drops days with none left. For a wedding the texts check the bride and the groom; run it once for each and pick a date good for both. Some texts let Chandrabala decide in the bright fortnight and Tarabala in the dark one; we apply both strictly.
Vivah Muhurat: common questions
Which months are best for marriage?
In the North Indian tradition: after Dev Uthani Ekadashi until Kharmas begins in mid-December, then from Makar Sankranti to before Holashtak, and from mid-April until Devshayani Ekadashi, provided Jupiter and Venus are not set. The finder applies these rules for the range you pick.
Why are there no weddings in Chaturmas and Kharmas?
Chaturmas is the period when Vishnu, the witness of the marriage vow, is said to sleep, and Kharmas is when the Sun is in Jupiter's signs and its strength is held to be low for new beginnings. Both are observed most strictly in North India; you can show those days with a flag if your family does not follow them.
Is a wedding on Amavasya or a Rikta tithi allowed?
No. Amavasya and the Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi) are avoided, and the finder never places a window in the hours they are in force.
Does this replace the priest or kundli matching?
No. It gives a well-reasoned shortlist from the panchang. The final muhurta, especially the lagna for the main rite, is fixed by a priest or astrologer who also looks at the family's charts and local custom.
Why does my almanac list different dates?
Almanacs follow different schools. They differ on the seasonal restrictions, on whether Bhadra spoils a whole day or only its hours, on the combustion orbs for Jupiter and Venus, and on regional customs. This page shows its rules in full, so you can see exactly why a date is in or out.
Why is the best time sometimes at night?
For marriage the finder also reads the night Choghadiya, because many weddings are held in the evening. A window after midnight still belongs to the Hindu day that began at sunrise, so it is listed under that date.
A muhurta for a wedding or a house is best fixed with both the panchang and the family's charts. Book a consultation for a personal muhurta.
