When is my Hindu birthday this year?
Many families celebrate a birthday on the janma tithi, the lunar date of birth, rather than the English date. Enter your birth details to find your tithi and lunar month, and the English date it falls on each year.
Celebrating the janma tithi
In many Hindu families the birthday that matters is the janma tithi: the lunar day of birth, in the lunar month of birth. Prayers, a visit to the temple or a small havan are kept on that day, and some families also feed Brahmins or give to charity.
The tithi is set by the angle between the Moon and the Sun, so it does not follow the solar calendar. That is why the English date moves from year to year.
How this calculator works
- It finds the tithi at the moment of your birth and the lunar month it fell in, in both the amanta and purnimanta systems.
- For each year it looks for the day whose sunrise at your birth place has that tithi in that month.
- Kshaya and vriddhi tithis and adhika months are handled by the traditional rules, and the table says when they apply.
Tithi or nakshatra?
In parts of South India, especially Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the birthday is kept on the day of the birth nakshatra in the solar month of birth rather than on the tithi. Both are traditional. If your family follows the nakshatra, find yours with the nakshatra finder and look for it in the panchang.
Hindu birthday: common questions
What is a Hindu (tithi) birthday?
It is the anniversary of your birth by the lunar calendar: the same tithi (lunar day) in the same lunar month as when you were born. Because twelve lunar months are about eleven days shorter than a year, its English date moves each year, usually within about three weeks either side of your birthday.
Why do I need my birth time?
A tithi can change at any hour. Your janma tithi is the one current at the moment you were born, which may differ from the tithi printed for your birth date (the one at sunrise).
Which place is used for sunrise?
Your birth place. If you now live far away, the date can occasionally differ by a day from your local panchang; the Hindu calendar converter lets you check any date for any city.
What if my tithi is missing or repeated in a year?
When the tithi touches no sunrise (kshaya), the birthday is kept on the day it runs. When it holds at two sunrises (vriddhi), the first day is used. The table marks both cases.
What happens in a year with an adhika masa?
Celebrations are kept in the regular (nija) month, not the extra one, so the table gives the date in the regular month and notes the adhika date. If you were born in an adhika month, your birthday is kept in the regular month of the same name.
Amanta or purnimanta: which month am I born in?
Both, by different names when you were born in Krishna paksha: purnimanta (North India) is then one month ahead of amanta (South and West India). The tool shows both. The birthday date is the same either way.
A birthday on the tithi is a lovely tradition. For a fuller reading of the year ahead from your birth chart, book a consultation.
