Hindu calendar converter

Turn an English (Gregorian) date into its Hindu lunar date, the tithi at sunrise with its paksha, month and samvat year. Or go the other way: pick a samvat year, month and tithi to see which English date it falls on.

Place (for sunrise)

The tithi is read at local sunrise, so the place can shift it by a day.

Hindu date to English date

2083 is the current Vikram Samvat year. It starts at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, in March or April.

How the Hindu calendar counts days

The Hindu calendar is lunisolar. Its days are tithis, thirty to a lunar month, each the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. Fifteen tithis of the waxing Moon make Shukla paksha, ending at Purnima; fifteen of the waning Moon make Krishna paksha, ending at Amavasya.

A civil day takes the tithi that is current at sunrise. That is why a festival can fall on different English dates in different years, and occasionally on different dates in different cities.

Months, samvat and the extra month

  • Months are named after the Sun's sign at the new moon that begins them: Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha and so on through Phalguna.
  • When no Sankranti falls inside a lunar month, that month is repeated as adhika masa; festivals stay in the regular month.
  • Vikram Samvat and Shaka Samvat both turn over at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the Hindu new year (Gudi Padwa, Ugadi).

Using the converter

Pick the place whose sunrise you follow, usually where you live or where a ritual will be held. To find when a tithi falls, choose the samvat year, the month in the system your family follows, the paksha and the tithi. If a tithi is kshaya or vriddhi that year the result says so.

For a vrat or festival, the observance rules (for example Ekadashi or Janmashtami) can add conditions beyond the sunrise tithi. The festival pages on this site apply those rules.

Hindu calendar converter: common questions

How is an English date converted to a Hindu date?

The converter finds local sunrise for the place you choose and works out the tithi then: the angle between the Moon and the Sun divided into 30 parts of 12 degrees. The lunar month comes from the Sun's sign at the new moon, and the samvat year from the last Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.

What is the difference between amanta and purnimanta months?

Both name the same lunar months. Amanta months end at the new moon and are used in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Purnimanta months end at the full moon and are used across North India. In the bright half (Shukla paksha) the names agree; in the dark half (Krishna paksha) purnimanta is one month ahead.

Why does the place matter?

A tithi changes at the same moment everywhere, but the day's tithi is the one current at local sunrise. If the change happens near sunrise, two cities can list different tithis for the same date.

What are kshaya and vriddhi tithis?

A tithi lasts between about 19 and 26 hours. When one starts after a sunrise and ends before the next, no sunrise has it: it is kshaya (lost). When one spans two sunrises, it is vriddhi (doubled) and appears on two dates. The converter tells you when either happens.

What is adhika masa?

Twelve lunar months are about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so roughly every 32 months a lunar month passes with no Sankranti in it. That month is repeated as adhika (extra) masa, also called Purushottam or Mal Maas. In 2026 Adhika Jyeshtha runs from 17 May to 15 June.

How do Vikram Samvat and Shaka Samvat relate to the English year?

Both begin at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, in March or April. From then until the end of December, Vikram Samvat is the English year plus 57 and Shaka Samvat the English year minus 78; between January and the new year it is plus 56 and minus 79.
