Mercury Retrograde 2026-2027 Dates, Plus Venus and Mars: Signs and What to Do
Mercury retrograde 2026: dates in India
Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2026: 26 February to 21 March, 29 June to 24 July, and 24 October to 13 November. The first two have already ended, and the third is the next one. All dates are in Indian Standard Time. They agree with the Eastern Time dates published by the Almanac, which are a day earlier on the two end dates because of the time difference.

The signs below use the Lahiri (sidereal) zodiac, from our own ephemeris calculation. Station times can differ by an hour or two between ephemerides, so allow a small margin.

Mercury governs communication, travel, contracts, commerce, study and technology. During retrograde, people commonly choose to:
- Back up data and double-check documents and bookings before sending or signing.
- Review rather than begin. Edit the draft, reread the contract, tidy the accounts.
- Reconnect with people from the past, since Mercury retrograde is traditionally associated with returns.
- Build in buffer time for travel and deadlines.
None of this is a ban. Life continues, and many people sign contracts and start projects during these windows. The practical lesson is to be a little more careful, which is sensible any time.
What is retrograde motion, and is it real?
A planet in retrograde appears to move backwards against the stars for a few weeks. This is an optical effect. Earth overtakes (or is overtaken by) another planet in its orbit, and for a while that planet seems to slow, stop, drift backwards and then resume forward motion. The planet itself is not moving backward.
Astronomers call the turning points stations: "stationary retrograde" when the planet appears to stop and begin moving backward, and "stationary direct" when it stops and resumes forward motion.
How often it happens:
- Mercury: three or four times a year, for around three weeks each time.
- Venus: about every 19 months, for roughly six weeks.
- Mars: about every 26 months, for around eleven weeks.
How does Vedic astrology read a retrograde (vakri) planet?
Vedic astrology does not read retrograde the way popular Western "Mercury retrograde" lore does. A few points:
- In the shadbala (six-fold strength) scheme, a retrograde planet is credited with full chesta bala, or motional strength. A retrograde planet is not simply "weaker".
- Its results are described as intense, internal, delayed or repeated. People often describe revisiting, reviewing or redoing things associated with that planet.
- A natal retrograde planet colours temperament across life. A transit retrograde is read as a limited period.
- Transit retrogrades are generally treated as times to review, finish and refine rather than to launch.
There is no scientific evidence that retrograde periods cause equipment failure, arguments or bad luck. Use them as a reminder to slow down, double-check and tie up loose ends.
When is Venus retrograde, and what changes?

Venus turned retrograde on 3 October 2026 and goes direct in mid-November. It slips back into Virgo on 6 November and returns to Libra on 22 November. There is no Venus retrograde in 2027.
Venus governs love, relationships, money, beauty, art and comfort. During retrograde:
- Relationships can bring old feelings, conversations or people back into view. Take time to reflect before making large, irreversible decisions.
- Money and purchases. Many people prefer to postpone major luxury purchases or big financial commitments and review budgets instead. This is a habit of caution, not a financial rule, so take professional advice on real money decisions.
- Appearance and style. A good time to simplify rather than start a dramatic change.

Mars retrograde in 2027: dates and what to do

Mars is retrograde for about eleven and a half weeks in 2027, moving back from Leo into Cancer on 10 March and returning to Leo on 26 April. Mars governs energy, courage, action, competition and conflict. During retrograde, energy can feel blocked or turned inward, and action needs more patience:
- Channel energy deliberately. Exercise and structured work help.
- Pause before reacting. Frustration can rise, so avoid unnecessary conflict.
- Take normal safety precautions with vehicles, tools and property.
- Finish rather than launch. Complete existing projects.
