The 12 Houses (Bhavas) in Vedic Astrology: What Each House Governs
The 12 Houses in Astrology: What Each Bhava Governs
The 12 houses in astrology are twelve divisions of the birth chart, each governing one area of life: body, money, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, longevity, fortune, career, gains and loss. In Vedic astrology a house is called a bhava, and the 1st bhava always starts from your rising sign (Lagna). Reading a chart is largely a matter of seeing which planet sits in which bhava, which sign falls on it, and where that house's lord has gone.
If signs tell you the "style" of a planet, and planets tell you the "actor", houses tell you the "stage": the part of life where the story plays out.
How are houses counted in Vedic astrology?
Your Lagna (rising sign) becomes the 1st house. The next sign becomes the 2nd house, and so on around the chart. Most Vedic astrologers use the whole-sign system, in which each house equals exactly one sign.
For example, with a Leo Lagna, Leo is the 1st house, Virgo the 2nd, Libra the 3rd and so on. Which sign is rising therefore changes who your 10th house lord is, and so changes your career indications. That is why the same planet can behave very differently in two charts. For the signs themselves, see the 12 rashis. If you do not yet know your Lagna, a free kundli generated from your exact birth time will show it, with every planet already placed in its house.
Some astrologers also consult a Bhava Chalit chart, which draws house cusps from the exact Lagna degree. A planet near the edge of a sign can shift one house in Chalit. Treat the whole-sign chart as the base and Chalit as a refinement; schools disagree on how much weight to give it.
The 12 houses, their significations and karakas
Each bhava also has a karaka, a planet that naturally signifies that house's matters in every chart. The list below is the one most Parashari astrologers work with; some texts add extra karakas for particular themes (Venus for vehicles in the 4th, the Sun for the father in the 9th), so treat it as a working standard rather than one fixed list.
| House | Sanskrit name | Main themes | Karaka | Group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu bhava | Self, body, personality, health, life direction | Sun | Kendra, trikona |
| 2nd | Dhana bhava | Wealth, speech, family, food, early education | Jupiter | Maraka |
| 3rd | Sahaja bhava | Courage, effort, siblings, skills, short travel | Mars | Upachaya |
| 4th | Sukha bhava | Home, mother, property, vehicles, peace of mind | Moon | Kendra |
| 5th | Putra bhava | Intelligence, children, creativity, romance, past merit | Jupiter | Trikona |
| 6th | Ari / Roga bhava | Enemies, debt, disease, service, daily work | Mars, Saturn | Dusthana, upachaya |
| 7th | Kalatra bhava | Marriage, partnerships, business, public dealings | Venus | Kendra, maraka |
| 8th | Randhra / Ayu bhava | Longevity, transformation, inheritance, research, secrets | Saturn | Dusthana |
| 9th | Dharma / Bhagya bhava | Luck, father, teachers, higher learning, faith | Jupiter (Sun for father) | Trikona |
| 10th | Karma bhava | Career, status, authority, public standing | Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn | Kendra, upachaya |
| 11th | Labha bhava | Gains, income, friends, networks, fulfilment of wishes | Jupiter | Upachaya |
| 12th | Vyaya bhava | Expenses, loss, sleep, foreign lands, moksha | Saturn | Dusthana |
A practical use of karakas: if the 5th house looks strong but Jupiter is badly afflicted, matters of children or higher study can still feel delayed. The house and its karaka are always read together.
Which houses are kendra, trikona, dusthana and upachaya?
Astrologers group houses because houses in the same group behave alike. One house can belong to more than one group, which is why the 10th (kendra and upachaya) or the 6th (dusthana and upachaya) give mixed but workable results.
Kendra houses: 1, 4, 7, 10
The "angles" of the chart. They are the pillars of action: self, home, partnership and career. Planets here have strong visible results.
Trikona houses: 1, 5, 9
The "trines" of fortune and dharma. The 1st, 5th and 9th are the most supportive houses. Their lords tend to bring good results.
Dusthana houses: 6, 8, 12
Houses of difficulty, effort and release. They deal with conflict, hidden matters, loss and endings. Planets here face challenges, but these houses also give resilience, research ability and spiritual depth.
Upachaya houses: 3, 6, 10, 11
"Growing" houses, where results improve with time and effort. Harsh planets such as Saturn, Mars and Rahu often do well here.
Maraka houses: 2 and 7
Traditional "killing" houses, used in longevity analysis. They are the 2nd and 7th because each is the 12th (the house of loss) from one of the two houses of longevity, the 3rd and the 8th. The lords of the 2nd and 7th are called marakas. In practice they are used to time health-sensitive periods alongside many other factors, never as a standalone prediction and never as a reason for fear.
House lords: the missing piece
Each house has a lord, which is the planet that rules the sign on that house. The condition and placement of the lord shows how that area of life works.
For example:
- The 10th lord in the 2nd house links career with money and speech.
- The 7th lord in the 12th house may link partnership with foreign matters or with expenses.
- A strong 9th lord in a kendra supports luck and guidance.
So reading a chart means asking two questions: which planets sit in this house, and where is the lord of this house? Our house-by-house guides apply this to each planet: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
Aspects and house strength
Planets do not influence only the house they sit in. They aspect other houses:
- Every planet aspects the 7th house from where it sits.
- Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th.
- Jupiter also aspects the 5th and 9th.
- Saturn also aspects the 3rd and 10th.
A house is stronger when its lord is well placed, benefic planets occupy or aspect it, and the planets in it are not weak. A house that is occupied by troubled planets and has a weak lord needs more care.
Reading a house step by step
Here is a simple way to read any house, such as the 10th for career (our 10th house career guide works through this house in much more detail):
- Identify the sign on the house and its lord.
- See which planets sit in the house.
- Check which planets aspect the house.
- Find where the house lord sits and in which sign.
- Look at the running dasha. See our Vimshottari Dasha guide.
If the lord of the 10th sits in the 11th and is strong, career and gains tend to support each other. If it sits in the 8th, career may involve research, change or irregular patterns. A single clue never decides anything. The pattern from several clues does.
Common mistakes
- Reading houses in isolation. Signs, planets and lords all matter.
- Treating dusthana houses as "bad". The 6th, 8th and 12th also give depth and resilience.
- Ignoring the Lagna. The house system starts from the rising sign.
- Using a Western house system. Many Vedic astrologers use whole signs, which can differ from systems such as Placidus. KP astrology is the main Indian school that works with Placidus cusps.

What are the 12 houses in astrology?
They are the 12 divisions of a birth chart, each governing a life area such as self, wealth, siblings, home, children, work, marriage, transformation, fortune, career, gains and loss. In Vedic astrology each house is called a bhava and is counted from the Lagna.
Which houses are the most important?
The kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona houses (1, 5, 9) are considered the most supportive. The 1st house is both, which makes it especially important.
What are dusthana houses?
The 6th, 8th and 12th houses. They relate to conflict, hidden matters and loss, and they also give resilience and depth.
Which house is for career and which is for marriage?
The 10th house is the main house of career, supported by the 2nd (income), 6th (service) and 11th (gains). Marriage is read mainly from the 7th house, its lord and Venus, with the 2nd house (family) and the Navamsa chart as confirmation.
What is the difference between a house and a sign?
A sign is a 30-degree part of the zodiac. A house is an area of life in your chart. With the whole-sign system, each house is one sign, but which sign falls on which house depends on your Lagna.
How do I know which house a planet is in?
Generate a sidereal birth chart with your exact date, time and place, for example with our free kundli tool. The chart shows each planet's sign and house.
