Navamsa (D9) Chart: What It Shows and How to Read It
What is the Navamsa (D9) chart, and how do you get yours?
The Navamsa is the ninth divisional chart, written D9. It cuts each 30° sign into nine equal slices of 3°20′ and places every planet in the sign of the slice it falls in. You do not need to compute it by hand: enter your exact birth details in the Navamsa chart calculator to see your D9, then read it alongside your kundli.
Astrologers use it for three things above all: the real strength of a planet, the nature of marriage and partnership, and the direction a life takes as it matures. The main birth chart (D1, or Rashi chart) shows what is promised. The Navamsa shows how well that promise holds up.
You never read the D9 on its own. It is a second look at the same planets, and its value comes from comparing the two charts.
Why nine divisions?
The number is not arbitrary. The zodiac holds 27 nakshatras, and each nakshatra has four quarters called padas. That makes 108 padas, and 108 divided by 12 signs gives nine. So every navamsa is exactly one nakshatra pada.
This is why the D9 is so closely tied to the Moon's nakshatra system. If you know a planet's nakshatra and pada, you already know its navamsa. The 27 nakshatras guide explains the padas in more detail.
How is the Navamsa calculated?
Each sign's nine navamsas run in zodiac order, but the starting point depends on the element of the sign:
| Sign element | Signs | First navamsa begins in |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Aries |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Capricorn |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Libra |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Cancer |
Then count 3°20′ at a time.
A worked example
Say the Sun is at 14° Taurus.
- 14 divided by 3.333 is 4.2, so the Sun is in the 5th navamsa of Taurus.
- Taurus is an earth sign, so its navamsas start in Capricorn.
- Count five signs from Capricorn: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus.
The Sun sits in Taurus in the D9 as well. When a planet occupies the same sign in both charts, it is called vargottama, which we come to below.
You do not need to do this by hand. Our Navamsa chart calculator gives you the full D9 from your birth details. Knowing the method still helps, because it shows why a few minutes of birth time matter.
Why does birth time matter so much for the D9?
The D9 Lagna (ascendant) changes on average every 13 minutes or so, because the rising sign changes about every two hours and each sign holds nine navamsas. The exact interval varies with how long each sign takes to rise at your latitude.
If your birth time is a rough guess, the D9 Lagna may be wrong even when the D1 Lagna is right. Planet positions in the D9 are far more stable, except for the Moon, which moves about one navamsa every six hours. So when the birth time is uncertain, lean on planetary dignity in the D9 and hold the D9 house positions more loosely.
Vargottama: when both charts agree
A vargottama planet is in the same sign in the D1 and the D9. It is traditionally treated as steady and reliable, because both levels of the chart describe it the same way.
It happens in a fixed pattern:
- Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): the first navamsa, 0° to 3°20′.
- Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): the fifth navamsa, 13°20′ to 16°40′.
- Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): the ninth navamsa, 26°40′ to 30°.
Vargottama does not make a planet good. A vargottama Saturn in a difficult house still does Saturn's work there, only more consistently. It makes the planet's results clearer and more dependable, for better or worse.
How to read the Navamsa, step by step
1. Check each planet's dignity in the D9
This is the single most useful thing the D9 tells you. Compare each planet's sign in the D1 with its sign in the D9:
- Strong in D1, strong in D9. The promise is real and tends to hold.
- Strong in D1, weak in D9. A planet that looks impressive may deliver less than expected, or its results may fade over time.
- Weak in D1, strong in D9. A planet that looks troubled often improves with age and effort. A debilitated planet in the D1 that is exalted or in its own sign in the D9 is one of the classic signs of recovery.
- Weak in both. The planet's themes need conscious work.
"Strong" here means exalted, in its own sign or in a friend's sign. "Weak" means debilitated or in an enemy's sign.
2. Read the D9 Lagna and its lord
The D9 Lagna describes inner character and how a person grows into themselves. Note which sign rises, where its lord sits in the D9, and whether that lord is dignified. A well placed D9 Lagna lord gives resilience.
Only trust this step if the birth time is accurate.
3. Look at marriage through the D9 7th house
The D9 is the main supporting chart for marriage. Check:
- The 7th house of the D9, any planets in it and the condition of its lord.
- Venus, the natural significator of marriage, and its dignity in the D9.
- Jupiter, which some traditions also use as a significator of the husband in a woman's chart.
- Whether the D1 7th lord gains or loses strength in the D9.
A strong D9 7th house supports a lasting and supportive partnership. A weak one does not mean no marriage. It points to the areas where the relationship needs care. To compare two charts, use kundli matching, and for a personal reading of both charts, a marriage astrology consultation looks at the Navamsa and the 7th house together. For when marriage is likely to happen, see marriage timing in the kundli, and for the question of love versus arranged marriage, see love marriage in astrology.
4. Connect it back to the D1
Every D9 observation should return to the main chart. If the D1 shows a strong 10th house and the 10th lord is also dignified in the D9, career promise is confirmed. If the D1 7th house is afflicted but Venus is strong in the D9, the relationship may start with difficulty and settle well.
Common mistakes
- Reading the D9 like a second birth chart. It does not replace the D1. House-by-house readings of the D9 are useful for marriage and inner nature, not for every life area.
- Ignoring birth time uncertainty. A wrong D9 Lagna shifts every house.
- Treating one weak planet as a verdict. Look at the pattern across several planets.
- Calling every same-sign planet vargottama. It must be the same sign in the D1 and D9, not the same house.
What the Navamsa does not tell you
The D9 does not show timing by itself. Events still unfold through the Vimshottari Dasha and transits, and you can see your own periods in the dasha calculator. It also does not decide whether a specific person is right for you. That needs both charts together, as in kundli matching and Guna Milan, and plenty of real-world judgement.

Book a consultationFrequently Asked Questions
What is the Navamsa chart used for?
Mainly to judge the true strength of each planet, the nature of marriage and partnership, and the inner direction of life. It is read together with the main birth chart, not instead of it.
What does a debilitated planet in the Navamsa mean?
It suggests the planet's promise in the birth chart is harder to realise or weakens with time. If the same planet is strong in the birth chart, the results usually still come, but with more effort.
What is vargottama?
A planet that sits in the same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa. Its results are considered steady and reliable.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
For planetary positions in the D9, a few minutes of error rarely matters. For the D9 Lagna and its houses, you need the time to within a few minutes, because the D9 Lagna changes roughly every 13 minutes.
How can I see my D9 chart online?
Enter your exact date, time and place of birth in the Navamsa chart calculator. Use a sidereal (Lahiri) setting, and check the birth time first, because the D9 Lagna depends on it.
Is the Navamsa only about marriage?
No. Marriage is its best-known use, but its wider role is to show the inner strength of every planet.
